Article 25

‘Article 25’ is a series of 25 images highlighting issues of homelessness, social exclusion and poverty.

Article 25 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that ‘everyone has the right to adequate housing’ but yet the NI Housing Executive figures for 2017/2018 show that 11,877 people are homeless. Moreover, the number of households designated as statutory homeless in Northern Ireland increased by 32 per cent between 2012 and 2017.

The images were produced by Westcourt Camera Club in collaboration with local homeless services. We asked men and women to share their feelings and emotions about being homeless and asked what they missed most about home.

These responses were interpreted by the Camera Club and combined with statistics and pictures of the grim reality of sleeping rough to offer an insight into the experiences of people impacted by homelessness.

‘Article 25’ was exhibited in Belfast for Homelessness Awareness Week 2018 and also in a number of schools in Belfast, Liverpool, Manchester, Stoke and Sunderland.
