Homelessness Photographic Exhibition

Westcourt Camera Club worked alongside Rosemount House, a sheltered accommodation and support service, to create a photographic exhibition which aims to increase awareness of and encourage discussion around the grim reality of homelessness in Northern Ireland.

Some of the photographs were taken by residents from Rosemount House while others were produced by camera club members inspired by the testimonies of other people with lived experience of homelessness.

The images are powerful, evocative and speak the truth about some of the circumstances and factors that force people into homelessness. The aim is to stress the scale and scope of the problem and show that it can happen to anyone.

To highlight the magnitude of the problem, the exhibition includes statistics from local and national government. These figures show that homelessness impacts thousands of adults and children right now.

From February 2023 this photo exhibition has been displayed in 14 locations across a number of cities including Belfast, Derry and Dublin, attracting local, national and international media coverage. Some of the photographers impacted by homelessness have taken part in public panel discussions alongside politicians, local authorities and human rights activists. Indeed, two of these men presented statements by video at the 52nd session of the Human Rights Council in March and the Special Rapporteur on Housing at the United Nations made a direct reference to one of the statements in his concluding remarks and how important it is to highlight the numbers of people in so called ‘developed’ countries that cannot access secure and affordable housing.
